The Empire of Brazil enacted the Lei de 28 de Agosto de 1830, which regulated how the government could grant a privilege (exclusive right) to anyone who discovered, invented, or improved a useful industry, and also provided for prizes for introducing foreign industries. The law laid out conditions, limits, and procedures for granting these privileges, creating one of Brazil’s earliest structured legal frameworks for protecting inventions.
