Brazil and Portugal signed the Treaty of Rio de Janeiro in Rio de Janeiro, formally recognizing Brazil as an independent state. The agreement is widely treated as the diplomatic conclusion of Brazil’s independence process, moving the country from de facto independence to formal international recognition by its former colonial ruler. After being signed, the treaty was later ratified by both governments and entered into force that same year.
