Description

During the Dutch invasions of Brazil, Dutch forces occupied the city of Olinda (then the capital of Pernambuco) and set it on fire. They chose to abandon the city in favor of nearby Recife, which offered better defensive and commercial advantages. The city was slowly rebuilt in the following decades after the Dutch were expelled in 1654.
