The 1935 Communist Uprising (Intentona Comunista) began on November 23 with a military revolt in the city of Natal. Led by the National Liberation Alliance (ANL) and Luís Carlos Prestes. The uprising spread to Recife and Rio de Janeiro in the following days before being crushed by Getúlio Vargas’s government.
