Brazil’s Regency government sanctioned the law that created the National Guard (Guarda Nacional) and extinguished older local forces such as militias and municipal guards. The law states that the National Guard was created to defend the Constitution, protect Brazil’s independence and territorial integrity, and help maintain public order. It also positioned the National Guard as an auxiliary force to the regular army, especially in defending borders and coasts when needed.
