Brazil held nationwide municipal elections. Voters elected mayors and city council members across the country. These elections were notable because all municipalities elected their mayors without the earlier restrictions that existed under prior rules. They were also among the first major elections after the 1988 Constitution was promulgated. The results shaped local governments for the 1989–1992 term.
