A military-led movement in Rio de Janeiro overthrew Brazil’s monarchy and proclaimed a republic. Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca led the troops that removed Emperor Pedro II from power. The change ended the Empire of Brazil and began the First Brazilian Republic period. A provisional republican government was formed immediately after the coup.
