Prince Regent Dom Pedro proclaimed Brazil’s independence from Portugal in what became known as the Cry of Ipiranga. The declaration took place near the Ipiranga stream in São Paulo, after escalating political conflict between Brazilian leaders and Portugal’s demands. This date is celebrated nationally as Independence Day (Sete de Setembro) in Brazil.
