U.S. Ambassador Charles Burke Elbrick was released unharmed in Rio de Janeiro after being kidnapped by Brazilian guerrilla groups ALN and MR-8. The kidnapping began on 4 September 1969 and was used to pressure Brazil’s military government to release political prisoners and publish a manifesto. Diplomatic records note that Elbrick was released after confirmation that the negotiated group of prisoners had arrived in Mexico.
