Varig Flight 254, a Boeing 737 flying from São Paulo to Belém, crashed in the Amazon rainforest near São José do Xingu, in the state of Mato Grosso. The aircraft ran out of fuel after flying in the wrong direction due to a navigation error caused by misinterpretation of the flight heading. Of the 54 people on board, 13 died, while survivors endured harsh conditions in the forest before rescue.
